Sewing Bee

Hello Ladies!

A call out for all crafty hands available to help out with our sewing bee!
 
We will be making bags to sell at the market to raise funds for the group.  

All levels of sewing experience welcome!

Volunteers and asylum seeker women sew together.

Margaret & one of the women from the Asylum Seeker Project

Here is Margaret and an asylum seeker she assisted during a special sewing session on Friday 12 June.  As part of a regular gathering of women coordinated by the Asylum Seeker Project, this event highlighted how special it can be to create something with someone.  

The photo shows one of the 20 bags that were sewn by the women with the help of our volunteers. There was also some great work coming out of the busy crochet and knitting corner.

Thanks so much to Sara, Elisa & all at Lentara Uniting Care for inviting us to take part. And for the delicious lunch.

And much gratitude to these sewing group women who so happily shared their time, enthusiasm & talent:

We all really enjoyed spending time with you all.

That's one way of making a drab old gate fun! 

Everyone wove in the colourful fabric at one of the Faith, Food and Fabric Fun events at The Pepper Tree!

Warming Wheatbag Sewing Bees

If you arrive in Melbourne in Winter with barely more than the clothes you are wearing, you can get very cold. An open Facebook group called Welcome Home!! (A donation exchange for refugees & asylum seekers in Melb) has been
gathering and distributing basic necessities, and the sewing group is going to host a couple of
sewing bees to make a pile of wheatbags to warm these newcomers.
A wheatbag, heated for a couple of minutes in the microwave, is like a hot water bottle,
only safer. Besides, we don't know how to make hot water bottles!

You can be useful even if you've never sewn before.
Let us know if you are interested, and what date/time would suit you,
and maybe join Welcome Home!!  

Edited to add: We have been asked to make some hot water bottle covers too,
as most asylum seeker houses don't have microwaves at this stage.

So far Friday morning is looking like a good time for the few who have mentioned a preference,
and we will make a start this Friday from 10:15 am. I will need to leave by about 12:30.

Normal sewing group times are also good times to sew for this project. Check on the right for
address, times and contact details.

Faith Food Fabric Fun - Interfaith Events

Faith Food Fabric Fun's latest event was for World Interfaith Harmony Day.

We made fabric tags and the community wrote down a prayer or hope and we hug them on a wishing tree.

Winter Holiday Projects

Happy 150!!

The sewing group takes place in the Brunswick Baptist Church Hall. This year the Church turned 150 years old! This beautiful banner was made for the occasion.

Coburg Carnivale

The sewing group decorated three trees out side the Coburg Library to help celebrate the Coburg Carnivale. Thanks to all the ladies who helped to make all the wonderful decorations, they look great!

Fabric, Faith And Fun

The sewing group is apart of the Fabric, Faith and Fun events that take place at the PepperTree Place through out the year.  Here are some photos taken when we celebrated Bhudda's Birth by making lanterns and friendship bracelets.

Knitters and Sewers needed

Helping the Australian Somali Women's Healthcare Community Foundation
Knitters and Sewers needed.

From 2012 the Multicultural Women's Sewing Group is happy to be supporting a Somali women's beginner sewing class.

They meet Monday, Thursday and Saturday at the Elderly Citizens Club in Melrose St North Melbourne, from about 5 pm to 8 pm, and need volunteer teachers in sewing and knitting. Basic skills are enough, and they are keen learners. Our teacher will also be there once or twice a week.

Spinning

Annet from the Pascoe Vale Spinners & Weavers

joined us at the sewing group. 

She showed us the different fibres she used, the different stages of the process and all 

kinds of lovely knitting she had made. 

The kids had a blast trying out the spinning wheel!

Oz Comfort Quilts

Last year the sewing group teamed up with the Moreland City Council for International Women's Day and made this beautiful quilt. Which was donated to the Oz Comfort Quilts appeal.

Faith, Food and Fabric Fun

Join us at PepperTree Place (Kildonan Coburg Kitchen Garden) for a Muslim Eid Celebration, created as one of a series of interfaith events by the Multicultural Women's Sewing Group and

PepperTree Place

Celebrate the diversity within our local community by sharing good food, fun activities and stories of how different people live life and practice their faith.

When: Saturday 3rd September, Between 10am - 2pm

Where: PepperTree Place - 512 Sydney Rd, Coburg - corner of Bell St/Sydney Rd

What:

* Learn how to make spinach pies with fresh greens from the

garden and watch them being cooked in the woodfired oven.

* Enjoy healthy, vegetarian creations hot from the community

kitchen and sweet desserts from around the world.

* Kids and adults alike can try their hand at a fabric-fun craft
